Questions

What people ask
about moving to Finland

Collected from surveys and the inbox on this one route. If yours is not here, put it in the notes on the quote form and it reaches the same people.

01

Does the load actually go by road all the way?

By road with one sea leg, which is unavoidable — Finland is only reachable overland through the Arctic. The vehicle crosses the Channel, runs across Belgium, the Netherlands and northern Germany, and then takes a Baltic ferry to Finland, or goes up through Sweden and crosses to Turku. Which of those depends on the sailing and the destination.

02

Is it a whole lorry, or shared?

Either. A dedicated vehicle goes when you say and arrives on a known day. A part-load shares the trailer with other consignments heading the same way, costs less, and gives you a delivery window instead. Finland is a long run, so the difference is larger than on a France move.

03

What does Finnish customs need now?

Since the UK became a third country, bringing household goods into Finland is a formal EU import. In practice that means a detailed inventory, evidence you are moving your permanent residence, and the transfer-of-residence relief claimed through Finnish customs. We prepare what we can and tell you what has to come from you.

04

Can you deliver to a Helsinki apartment?

Yes, and it is most of what we do. The questions are always the same: which floor, is there a lift, how wide is the lift door, and is there a courtyard or a designated loading spot. Finnish housing companies often want notice before a move-in, so tell us if yours does.

05

Is winter a problem?

It changes the plan rather than stopping it. Baltic sailings can be delayed by ice conditions, Finnish yard access needs clearing, and goods sitting in an unheated stairwell in February is not something to arrange casually. We build the schedule around it rather than pretending it is July.

06

Where in the UK do you collect from?

Anywhere in mainland Britain. London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Glasgow and Edinburgh are the most frequent, but the collection point is wherever your household currently is. Say so in the brief if it is split across two addresses.

07

How is a quote worked out?

Volume, access at both ends, how much packing you want, and whether it is a dedicated vehicle or shared space. The survey sets the volume properly — a Finland move costs too much to guess at and adjust later.

08

Does a survey cost anything?

No. On an international move it is worth doing properly because the inventory it produces becomes the customs packing list. Video surveys work well and are common on this route.

09

What is export packing?

Packing that assumes more handling and more hours of vibration than a domestic move: more robust cartons, moisture protection on upholstery, cases for framed work, and crating for stone or glass. It also assumes the load may be opened for inspection, so the inventory has to match what is in each carton.

10

What paperwork do I personally have to get?

Broadly: evidence that you are establishing residence in Finland, your identification, and — depending on your circumstances — documentation of the Finnish address. We will tell you exactly which items at the start of the job rather than in the final fortnight, because some of them take weeks.

11

Do I need a Finnish personal identity code?

For the residence side of things it becomes necessary quickly, and the customs relief is easier when the residence position is documented. It is obtained in Finland rather than by us, so it is one of the items we flag early.

12

Can things go into storage first?

Frequently the sensible answer. A UK sale rarely lines up with Finnish residence paperwork, so the household is packed and held here, inventoried, and travels once the documents exist. Storage in Finland is also arrangeable where the apartment is not ready.

13

Do you move cars, boats or motorbikes?

Vehicles are a separate movement with their own registration and tax consequences in Finland, and folding one onto a household inventory causes problems. We will point you to the right route rather than carry it quietly.

14

What about alcohol, plants and food?

Alcohol above personal quantities has to be declared and attracts Finnish duty, which is significant. Plants and untreated timber have phytosanitary rules. Perishable food is not worth moving. Ask before packing any of them.

15

Do Finnish buildings restrict move-in times?

Many housing companies do — a notice period, a permitted window, sometimes a lift booking and protective covering in the stairwell. It is worth asking your housing manager early; it is a common cause of a delivery being turned away on arrival.

16

Are my things insured?

Goods in transit cover is in place for the whole journey, and storage is covered too. There are the usual conditions about owner-packed cartons and items of unusual value, so declare anything genuinely valuable before the move and we will confirm in writing what applies.

17

What happens if the ferry is delayed?

It gets communicated rather than absorbed. Baltic sailings move for weather and, in deep winter, ice. The quote gives an expected window rather than a fixed arrival day precisely because that is the honest position on this route.

18

Can you do a business relocation?

Yes. Offices, studios and small operations moving to Finland, or a UK office consolidating into a Finnish one. Different paperwork from a household move — commercial goods do not get transfer-of-residence relief — so it is priced and documented differently.

19

Do you cover Lapland and the far north?

Yes, though it is a long onward leg from the ferry port and it is scheduled accordingly. Rovaniemi and the north are perfectly deliverable; they just are not a same-day extension of a Helsinki delivery.

20

Can you bring us back to the UK later?

Yes. A return move is a customs movement in the other direction with its own documentation — UK import rather than EU import. Same route, different forms.

Still not answered?

Put it in the notes on the quote form. Customs and paperwork covers the documentation in detail, destinations covers the Finnish end, and part-load covers the shared-space option.
