Varsinais-Suomi · the south-west coast
Removals from the UK
to Turku
The old capital on the south-west coast, and one of the two ways into the country. A compact riverside city with a medieval core, a working port, and an archipelago behind it that turns a delivery into a small logistics exercise of its own.
Turku has a practical advantage over every other Finnish destination on this route: it is a port of entry. A load coming up through Sweden crosses from Stockholm to Turku, which means a Turku delivery can sometimes be made almost directly off the vessel rather than after a long onward drive.
It is also the most bilingual part of the country, and the gateway to an archipelago that stretches a long way out into the Baltic.
The city
The old centre and the riverside
Around the cathedral, the market square and the Aura river. Compact, handsome, and mostly workable — narrower streets in places, courtyard entrances, and archways whose height is worth confirming before a tall vehicle commits to one. Considerably less constrained than the Helsinki old town.
The 1960s and 70s districts
Nummi, Varissuo, Runosmäki and the surrounding blocks. Proper lifts, room to park, predictable work.
The newer riverside and harbour development
Modern apartments with loading arrangements and lifts built for furniture. Straightforward, with the usual housing company rules.
Detached and coastal housing
Around Kaarina, Raisio, Naantali and the coast. Driveways and turning space, easy in summer, and in winter subject to whether the drive has been cleared.
The archipelago
This is the part of a Turku delivery that needs genuine planning. The archipelago runs out through Pargas, Nagu, Korpo and beyond on a chain of bridges and connecting ferries, several of them small, some of them seasonal, and all of them with their own timetables and weight limits.
We deliver to the connected islands routinely. What it needs is the island named at quote stage rather than at the port, so the connecting ferry and its limits are part of the plan. Islands without a vehicle connection are a separate arrangement and we will say so rather than improvise.
Language
The south-west is properly bilingual and you may receive housing company correspondence in Swedish rather than Finnish. It makes no difference to the customs documentation — see the customs page — but it catches British arrivals off guard, so it is worth saying.
Around Turku
Naantali, Raisio, Kaarina, Salo and Uusikaupunki are all delivered from the same run. Helsinki is along the E18, and all destinations covers the rest of the country.

Turku questions
Do loads come in through Turku?
Often, yes. The Stockholm–Turku crossing is one of the two ways into Finland, so a Turku delivery can sometimes be made almost straight off the boat. That makes it one of the quicker destinations to reach on this route.
What is the old centre like to deliver into?
Compact and workable, with some narrow streets near the cathedral and the river. Courtyard access is common and archway height is worth checking. Nothing like as constrained as central Helsinki.
Do you deliver to the archipelago?
To the connected islands, yes — Pargas and the bridge-and-ferry chain out towards Nagu and Korpo. It needs planning around the connecting ferries and it is not a same-day extension of a Turku delivery. Islands without a vehicle connection are a separate arrangement.
Is Swedish or Finnish the language on paperwork?
Both are official and the south-west is genuinely bilingual, so you may see either. It makes no practical difference to the customs documentation, which we prepare regardless, but do not be thrown if a housing company writes to you in Swedish.
